How did Nathan find out about the Access to Employment Programme?

Nathan found out about the course through Blackpool Job Centre.

Nathan’s journey so far

When Nathan was younger he hated school with a passion, the reason for this was a lack of engagement with teachers and a personal attitude problem. So much so the head teacher requested that he should leave the school early, as it was believed he would not pass a single exam. This was mainly due to lack of attendance and problematic family circumstances. This was something that stuck with Nathan mentally and as a result he didn’t engage with any opportunity to learn.

As the years passed by, he drifted from one unskilled job to another without any purpose or idea of where he was going or what he wanted to do! In conjunction with this, he has had a lot of negative things happen in his life, which has resulted in him having a huge fear of failure. This has caused him to try nothing new as this meant he could not fail. He also became a little shy and insular.

When he attended the job centre, Seasiders was recommended and employability courses were suggested, he felt that he was being forced back to school and he feared the worse. He came to Seasiders with his expectations being very low. He was unaware of what to expect and felt out of his comfort zone.

Nature of support provided

Nathan attended the English and maths courses at Seasiders Learning Centre, where he brushed up on his skills in both subjects. Whilst this was to improve his skills and refresh what he learnt at school, he also felt the course improved his confidence and enjoyed the blended approach to learning as well as assisting his classmates with activities and developed his public speaking skills. Nathan achieved level 2 in maths and level 1 in English. Progressing from this, he recognised he needed more employability skills and this opened the door to attending the Access to Employment course (ATE).

Nathan really enjoyed the course and found the tutors to be very helpful and supportive. They assisted him with his ICT, maths and English skills to develop skills for work with an emphasis being on his writing and speaking and listening skills, in relation to the development of his confidence and public speaking.

What did Nathan say about being involved on the Access to Employment programme.

“Since I came to Seasiders and been on the Access to Employment programme, I have gained a passion for learning which was thanks to the Seasiders team as a whole. I now have a goal in my life, which I never had before. This was due to the courses that I have completed, alongside the advice and guidance I have received. I have always had a love of numbers, but never thought of using it to be able to help or teach others. This has changed with the help of my tutors”
